History

SpaceKraft® was first presented to MacMillan Bloedel Research as an idea that would make intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) stronger and easier to set up than that of the conventional corrugated laminated IBC. Research took the idea and conducted a feasibility study, which lead to full project research from 1980 until 1985.

In 1985, MacMillan Bloedel moved their research to England in hopes of breaking into the European market. After three years, MacMillan Bloedel formed SpaceKraft in Marietta, Georgia to enter into the larger U.S. markets.

In 1990, the SpaceKraft system was introduced to meet demand by food and chemical processors seeking a more environmentally friendly means of shipping nonhazardous liquids. Unlike steel drums and returnable totes traditionally used, SpaceKraft containers offered shippers an easily recyclable, completely biodegradable, and waste-to-energy efficient container.

In 1992, construction began on the Indianapolis, Indiana plant and by year end SpaceKraft containers were being used for both domestic and export shipments of a wide variety of liquid products.

In 1999, Weyerhaeuser acquired SpaceKraft and in 2000 the Salem, Oregon plant was opened. Before the decade was over, SpaceKraft®, A Weyerhaeuser Business, had developed IBCs for nonhazardous and hazardous solids. To complete the line, a steel cage capability was announced in early 2001.

Today, we offer one of the most extensive lines of intermediate bulk containers available from a single source. This means that we can help our customers choose the right IBC solution without bias; and we can provide any technical support needed to get the most from our packaging systems.
